Strategy Committee's Visit to the U.S.

On 25th September 2013, members of the Strategy Committee of the South China Environment Fund and members from other major Chinese environment foundations arrived in theU.S.for a 12 day study tour on environmental sponsorship.

The delegation visitedNew York,New Orleans, andLos Angelesas well as over 10 grant-making organizations, such as the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Tiffany & Co. Foundation, the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Hewlett Foundation, SV2 – a social venture foundation from theSilicon Valley, Silicon Valley Community Foundation and more.

The delegation also attended the annual conference of the Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA), where manyU.S.environmental foundations had in-depth exchange and discussions on climate change, community collaboration, urban farming, ecological agriculture, environmental education and other issues.

At the end of the visit, a gala dinner themed "Focusing on China" was held, during which the delegates had active discussion with international peers on China's environmental issues, the development of environmental NGOs and foundations, Chinese business leaders' participation in the environmental cause and other topics.

This visit stemmed from discussions between some Chinese and international foundation practitioners. They thought that theU.S.is a world leader in philanthropy while the sector is in an emerging stage inChina. It was hoped such a visit would give the Chinese foundations an opportunity to learn from theirU.S.counterparts experience and further their efforts in environmental grant making.

Delegates were impressed by many aspects of the visit and exchange. The trip not only gave them a learning opportunity but also promoted the establishment of the Chinese Environmental Grantmakers Association (CEGA).
