In this area of funding, the Fund directs particular attention to pollution issues in key river basins in southern China. In recent history, more than 50 percent ofChina’s rivers have disappeared altogether, and most of the remaining ones are heavily polluted. The impact is clear: Chinese citizens confront increasing water scarcity, pollution, and demand. Southern China holds around 80 percent of the entire nation’s water resources including such critical watersheds as those of the Pearl River,MinjiangRiver, andXiangjiangRiver. Heavy metal and other toxic discharges from intense industrial development have severely contaminated water quality in southernChinaand are major contributors to regional environmental and public health problems. Involving the public and civil society in southernChina’s water resource management and pollution mitigation can generate benefits for the entire country’s future. We look to fund local environmental NGOs that adopt an approach of scientific research and analysis to their problem solving processes. We encourage them to fully utilize their on-the-ground advantage in exploring and practising multi-faceted strategies in recognition of the multi-faceted nature of envrionmental challenges. We also favour initiatives that build effective platforms of community engagement and participation in water management, and those that further the policy action and legal enforcement of water pollution controls and water resource protection. The overarching aim in this area is to promote equitable environmental outcomes. Our funding to date is as follows.
